EIEC, Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli; ETEC, Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli; STEC, Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli. Shigella dysenteriae can possess a Shiga toxin gene identical to the Shiga toxin 1 found in STEC.
