1. What is the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System?
The BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System is an innovative option to managing urinary incontinence. The BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System is comprised of two devices: the BD PureWick™ Female External Catheter which captures urine that is drawn away by the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection Canister.

4. Is the BD PureWick™ Female External Catheter reusable?
No, it is a single-use device that should be replaced at least every 8 to 12 hours, or immediately if soiled with blood or faeces.
5. The label on the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System says the product contains lead. What part of the device contains lead?
The power cord is the part of the device that contains lead. The lead is contained in the interior wiring of the power cord.
6. How much suction is coming from the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System?
Approximately 120 mmHg - 140 mmHg.
7. How often do you need to replace the canister and tubing?
Replace the canister and tubing at least every 60 days or per facility protocol, whichever is sooner. If you notice any of the following, replace immediately: Canister or tubing has residual urine build-up, canister or tubing appear cloudy, canister or tubing appear discoloured, canister becomes cracked, tubing becomes torn or the BD PureWick™ External Catheter no longer securely connects to collector tubing.
8. The BD PureWick™ Female External Catheter leaked when I used it. How do I prevent it from leaking?
Accurate positioning is key to preventing leaks. Place the BD PureWick™ Female External Catheter snugly against the perineum (are between the anus and the vaginal opening), aligning the top of white gauze against the pubic bone. Tuck the end of the BD PureWick™ Female External Catheter between the gluteal muscles (buttocks). After confirming proper positioning, check the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System's suction to ensure it is functioning properly.
9. How do you test the suction of the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System?
Verify suction by disconnecting the BD PureWick™ Female External Catheter from the collector tubing and placing the end of the collector tubing into a cup of water. If water easily flows into the collection canister replace the BD PureWick™ Female External Catheter. If the system is not suctioning properly, please refer to the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System user guide for troubleshooting steps.
10. What's the recommendation for cleaning the accessories and the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System?
The accessories and the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System should be cleaned and disinfected at the time of each use or, at a minimum, daily. Detailed instructions on cleaning and disinfection are outlined in the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System User Guide.
11. Can patients wear underwear?
Yes, mesh underwear can be worn; similar to what is used in Labour and Delivery Wards. In fact, mesh underwear may help secure the product in some patients/users.
